"My 18 year old son Juan started riding with the Riding for the Disabled Association on the Island when he was four. He joined the Pennybridge family when he was thirteen. He has balance and co-ordination problems and sight impairment.Since starting to ride at Pennybridge Juan’s sight has deteriorated greatly. He is now blind in one eye and has minimal tunnel vision in the other. It is largely due to Carolyn and Rachael’s skill as teachers that he continues not only to ride, but to improve his seat and technique. He has now competed twice at the RDA National Dressage Championships in England, coming 3rd in his class in 2011.I am always struck by the way in which Carolyn and Rachael adapt their teaching to cater for Juan’s needs in such a sensitive way. He continues to ride in group lessons as the other riders very kindly accommodate his vision loss. He is treated just like any of the other riders, with a mixture of enthusiastic praise and robust humour. At Pennybridge he can be a normal 18 year old. Juan thrives on this.
